5 Insurance Gaps That Could Sink Your Small Business (And How to Close Them)

Most small business owners think they're covered. They have a general liability policy, maybe a BOP, and they've checked the box. But when a claim actually happens, the gaps show up fast.

Here are the five most common coverage gaps we see — and what to do about each one.

Gap 1: No Cyber Liability Coverage

If your business stores customer data, processes payments, or uses email — you have cyber exposure. A data breach, ransomware attack, or phishing scam can cost tens of thousands of dollars in recovery, legal fees, and notification costs.

Standard general liability and BOP policies do not cover cyber incidents. Cyber liability coverage is a separate policy, and it's more affordable than most business owners expect.

Gap 2: Misclassified Workers

If you use independent contractors, be careful. If a contractor is injured on the job and a court determines they were actually an employee — you could be liable for workers' compensation benefits you never planned for.

Florida has strict workers' comp requirements. Make sure your classification is accurate and your coverage reflects your actual workforce.

Gap 3: Business Interruption Coverage That's Too Thin

Many business owners have business interruption coverage — but the limits are set too low, or the waiting period is too long. When a hurricane, fire, or flood shuts you down, the coverage needs to actually replace your lost income while you rebuild.

Review your limits annually. If your revenue has grown, your interruption coverage should grow with it.

Gap 4: No Professional Liability (E&O) Coverage

General liability covers bodily injury and property damage. It does not cover claims that your professional advice, service, or work caused a financial loss to a client.

If you're a consultant, contractor, accountant, designer, or any other service professional — a dissatisfied client can sue you for the financial impact of your work. Professional liability covers your defense costs and any settlement.

Gap 5: Underinsured Commercial Property

Many business owners insure their commercial property at its purchase price or assessed value — not its replacement cost. After a major loss, the difference between what insurance pays and what it actually costs to rebuild can be devastating.

Get a replacement cost appraisal and make sure your policy reflects current construction costs, not what you paid five years ago.

The Bottom Line

Insurance gaps don't announce themselves. They show up when you file a claim and find out what isn't covered. The time to find them is before something goes wrong — not after.
